Press Release: NPC reaction to General Election result

NPC congratulates Keir Starmer and the Labour Party on their victory in the General Election. We look forward to working with the new government to maximise the impact of charities and philanthropy in the UK.

Dan Corry, Chief Executive of NPC and former Head of the Number 10 Policy Unit, said:

To be back in power after just one election cycle following Labour’s 2019 loss is a major achievement for Keir Starmer and his team.

This moment of change is a powerful opportunity for charities and philanthropists to join forces with government to help improve people’s lives all over the country.

The shadow Labour team had built strong links and good relationships with the sector in recent years – and we urge them to continue that into government, even with the need for a new name to lead the DCMS team. It’s vital that civil society has a strong voice in Whitehall if Labour is going to be able to deliver on its 5 Missions.

As new ministers settle into their briefs, NPC and the whole the social sector – charities, funders, philanthropists, and impact investors – stand ready to assist with the mission of re-building our country.

Leah Davis, Head of Policy and External Affairs at NPC, said:

Charities and funders will be critical partners for the new government to deliver across its 5 missions.

They have the knowledge, experience, and trusted relationships to effectively deliver Labour policies like Regional Growth Plans and Youth Futures Hubs (which support young people with their mental health). They will also be vital partners in honouring the new government’s commitment to ensure that no community is left behind in the transition to net zero.

We are particularly pleased to see the new government adopt NPC’s criminal justice recommendations: to place youth workers and mentors in A&E units and Pupil Referral Units and support prisons to link up with charities to reduce reoffending and support ex-offenders into work. Charities have often been overlooked in these areas, so the change of approach is welcome.
